To keep your golf cart battery in top shape, charge it after every use and avoid letting it sit discharged. Top off the cells with only distilled water after charging. Regularly clean the terminals with a baking soda and water solution to prevent corrosion and check that all connections are tight. During storage, keep the battery fully charged to prevent permanent damage. For lead-acid batteries, avoid letting the charge drop below 50% and never let the battery die completely.

Start by fully charging your batteries, then let them rest for at least 30 to 60 minutes. Using a digital multimeter set to DC voltage, test each battery individually and compare the reading to its standard voltage. A healthy 8V battery should read around 8.6V, and a healthy 12V battery should read around 12.7V. For a more accurate picture of real-world performance, use a load tester to see how each battery holds up under actual operating conditions.

You can also test the electrolyte's specific gravity using a battery hydrometer. This unit measures the weight ratio of sulfuric acid to water in each individual cell.

Golf cart batteries typically last 3 to 5 years, and several warning signs indicate it's time for a replacement. The most telling indicator is a rapid voltage drop under load, which often makes the cart feel sluggish during normal use. You might also notice your driving range is much shorter, your vehicle accelerates more slowly or struggles to climb hills, or you need to add water to the battery every few weeks. Longer-than-usual charging times are another red flag. Finally, inspect the battery itself. If you see signs of leaking acid or a swollen battery case, the battery should be replaced.
